Capitulare de Villis — Christmas Fish & Stewards Flashcards (Cornell style)
How to use: Read the left cue (clause + quirky legal Q) out loud. Then cover it and try to answer using the right notes. These are comic, short and made for a 13-year-old mini-lawyer.
Clause 21
Quirky legal tip/question:
"Keep fishponds merry! — Q: Where should a steward keep or build fishponds by Christmas?"
Places / settings / roles: Royal estates, existing fishponds, new practicable pond sites, steward who manages them.
Ally McBeal–style lyric: "Ponds for the palace, ponds full of cheer — grow them now so fish swim near!"
Think like a mini-lawyer Q: If a pond didn’t exist before, when may a steward make one? (Answer hint: where it’s practicable — choose safe, useful places and aim to have them serving the estate by the next royal visit or Christmas accounts.)
Clause 62
Quirky legal tip/question:
"Christmas Ledger Time — Q: What must a steward report by Christmas?"
Places / settings / roles: Steward’s district, royal court, estates (mills, forests, fishponds, vineyards, markets), fishermen and other craftsmen whose output creates income.
Ally McBeal–style lyric: "By Christmas light, list every fee — fish, furs, mills, and honey for the tree!"
Think like a mini-lawyer Q: Name five income items the steward must include in the Christmas statement. (Quick answer: fishponds/fish, mills, forests/game fines, market rents, chickens & eggs — plus many others listed.) Bonus: How would you count fish? (Hint: include fishpond yields under 'fishponds' and record sales or stock.)
Clause 45
Quirky legal tip/question:
"Keep the crew ready — Q: Which skilled workers must a steward have for Christmas and everyday needs?"
Places / settings / roles: Estate workshops, forges, kitchens, nets & boats: blacksmiths, fishermen, net-makers, bakers, brewers, soap-makers, shoemakers, carpenters, shield-makers, falconers, turners, and more.
Ally McBeal–style lyric: "Ring out the craftsmen, ring out the bell — nets that catch and bread that smells swell!"
Think like a mini-lawyer Q: If your estate lacks a net-maker before Christmas, what should the steward do? (Answer hint: obtain or train one, hire from nearby, or arrange for necessary tools/people so fishing and the royal needs continue.)
Clause 65
Quirky legal tip/question:
"Sell, restock, repeat — Q: When the king's away, what may the steward do with the fish?"
Places / settings / roles: Fishponds, markets, steward (who sells fish and restocks ponds), buyers, royal cellar (when fish are kept for visits).
Ally McBeal–style lyric: "When the crown's not here, sell the catch — make a profit, plant a batch!"
Think like a mini-lawyer Q: How should a steward balance selling fish for profit vs keeping enough for royal visits? Where does the profit go? (Answer hint: sell surplus when the king isn’t visiting to make profit for the king’s benefit; always restock so ponds supply fish when royals come.)
Quick study tip: Cover the left column and try answering the mini-lawyer Q for each card — then reveal the right side to check your mini-lawyer reasoning. Happy Christmas accounting, little steward!
