Mountains Are Big Bumps on Earth

Mountains are very big bumps on the ground. They can be as tall as a giant and are made from lots of rock, soil, and stones stacked together.

Step 1: What is a mountain?

A mountain is a high, steep place that goes up from the land around it. Some have trees, some have snow, and some are very rocky.

Step 2: How mountains form (simple)

Think of the Earth like a big puzzle of huge pieces. Sometimes those pieces push together. When they push, the ground can crumple and go up — that makes a mountain. Some mountains come from volcanoes that push up rock and lava.

Step 3: Layers of a mountain

  • Top layer: Soil, grass, trees, and sometimes snow. This is where plants and animals live.
  • Middle layers: Different kinds of rocks and stones stacked like pages in a book or layers in a cake.
  • Bottom layer: Big, hard rock called bedrock that holds everything up.

Step 4: Plants and animals

Different parts of the mountain have different homes. The top might be cold and have snow, the middle may have trees, and the bottom might have bushes and rivers.

Fun Activity: Make a mountain!

  1. Get paper and crayons or some playdough.
  2. Draw a big triangle for the mountain. Color the top white for snow if you like.
  3. Draw layers inside the triangle: green soil on top, brown and gray rocks in the middle, and a thick dark rock at the bottom.
  4. Or make the same layers with playdough: green on top, then different colors for rock, then a hard-color base.

Tip: A mountain is like a huge layered cake—soft soil on top, lots of rock layers in the middle, and very strong rock underneath. Have fun drawing and exploring!
