Indus Valley Civilization — for a 7-year-old
The Indus Valley Civilization was one of the oldest and biggest groups of people who lived together in cities a very long time ago — about 4,000 years ago!
1. Where and when?
- It was in the area that is now Pakistan and north-west India.
- People lived there around 2600 to 1900 BCE — that's about 4,000 years ago.
2. Big cities
- Harappa and Mohenjo-daro were two big cities.
- The cities had straight streets like a chessboard. Houses were close together.
- Some houses had bathrooms and toilets and drains that carried water away — that was very clever!
- Mohenjo-daro had a special place called the Great Bath — a big pool where people might have washed or had special ceremonies.
3. How people lived
- Many were farmers. They grew wheat and barley and kept animals like cattle.
- Some people made pots, beads, cloth, and metal tools.
- They traded things with other places — for example, they sent beads and got metals.
4. Writing and seals
- People used small carved stones called seals with pictures and signs on them.
- Their writing is still not fully understood today, so scientists are still trying to read it.
5. Why did the civilization end?
No one knows the exact reason, but it might be because of changing rivers, not enough water, changes in climate, or problems with trade. It probably ended slowly, not in one big event.
6. How do we know about them?
Archaeologists are people who dig in the ground to find old houses, pots, tools, and seals. These finds tell us how the people lived long ago.
7. Fun facts
- They had houses with bathrooms and drains — one of the earliest used systems for keeping cities clean.
- They liked making tiny and beautiful beads out of stone and shell.
- Animals like bulls and elephants appear on their seals and toys.
8. Easy activities
- Draw a city with straight streets, small houses, and a big bath.
- Make a 'seal' by pressing a small shape into play-dough and drawing little signs on it.
- Play 'archaeologist': bury a small toy in a cup of sand and gently dig it out with a spoon.
