Student: 13-year-old (homeschool)

Overview: She approaches challenging Alcumus practice with enthusiasm. Daily mixed-problem drills have noticeably improved both her speed and accuracy.

Mathematical practice and presentation: I prompt her to use consistent units and to include written justifications for every answer. When I asked for more verbal insight during a recent task, she happily obliged: she narrated her algebraic steps aloud and produced a neat, clearly labelled diagram. The diagram improved the clarity of her solution, and tidy labels anchored her reasoning so her peers (and future reviewers) could follow each step.

Pythagorean fluency: Her number sense with right triangles is strong. When given a hypotenuse, she quickly checked whether a candidate value (for example, 5) could be a leg, then confidently squared values, performed the subtraction, and extracted square roots to find the missing sides without hesitation. This shows secure conceptual grasp as well as procedural fluency.

Verbal reasoning and transfer: She can explain her steps clearly and transfer that reasoning to new problems. Her spoken explanations reinforce her written work and make it easier to spot any gaps to address.

Next steps: Continue regular review and targeted practice in constructing polished written proofs and justifications. Keep emphasising consistent units, clear labelling on diagrams, and concise verbal explanations — these small habits will strengthen both accuracy and communication in line with ACARA v9 expectations.
