Why Sunglasses Help Your Eyes

Hi! Sunglasses are like little hats for your eyes. They help keep your eyes safe when the sun is very bright and hot.

1. The sun can be too bright

When the sun is very bright you might squint or your eyes might feel tired. Bright light hurts your eyes a little bit, like when the sun makes your skin pink.

2. Sunglasses block bright light and glare

Sunglasses make the light softer so your eyes don’t squint. They also stop glare — that is the shiny, super bright light from water, sand, or snow that makes it hard to see.

3. Sunglasses protect from invisible sun beams (UV)

The sun has tiny invisible beams called UV. These can be like a tiny sunburn for your eyes. Good sunglasses block the UV so your eyes stay healthy.

4. How to pick sunglasses (ask a grown-up)

  • Find ones that fit snugly on your face so they don’t fall off.
  • Pick fun colors and shapes you like — you will wear them more!
  • Ask a grown-up to get sunglasses that say they block 100% UV (or UV400).

5. When to wear them

  • Wear sunglasses whenever you play outside on sunny days.
  • Wear them at the beach, by a pool, or on snowy days (snow makes lots of glare).
  • Never look straight at the sun — sunglasses don’t make that safe.

6. Extra simple tips

  • Keep sunglasses in a case when you’re not using them so they don’t get scratched.
  • If they break, tell a grown-up so you can get a new pair.
  • Make sunglasses a fun part of playing outside — like a sun-safe costume!

Wearing sunglasses helps your eyes feel comfy and keeps them safe from bright light and UV when you play outside. Ask a grown-up to help pick the right pair and put them on before you go out in the sun!
