Why Skunks Spray (for a 6-year-old)
Skunks have a very smelly trick to keep themselves safe. They only use it when they are scared.
1. Why they spray
- Skunks spray to scare away animals or people that might hurt them.
- Think of it like the skunk's special smell shield — it tells trouble to go away.
2. How the stinky cloud works
- Skunks have tiny scent bottles (glands) near their tail. When they are scared, they squeeze those glands.
- The stinky stuff shoots out in a little cloud. It smells very strong and stays on things for a long time.
3. How to tell a skunk might spray
- They might stamp their feet or shuffle.
- They lift their tail straight up like a flag.
- If you see those signs, the skunk is saying, “I am scared — please go away!”
4. What to do if you see a skunk
- Stay calm and very quiet.
- Back away slowly — do not run or shout.
- Go inside and tell an adult.
5. If a skunk sprays you or your pet
- Tell an adult right away.
- Don’t touch your face or eyes. The adult can help you take off the sprayed clothes and wash your skin with soap and water.
- If a pet was sprayed, tell an adult to call the veterinarian.
Quick fun facts
- Skunks don’t want to spray all the time — they would rather run away if they can.
- The smell is their way to say, “Leave me alone!”
Remember: be calm, give the skunk space, and always get an adult to help.
