Puss in Boots — A Simple Story for a 6-year-old

This is a fun story about a clever cat who helps his poor master become important and happy. Here is what happens, who the characters are, and what we can learn.

Step-by-step story

  1. A poor miller dies and leaves his youngest son only a cat.
  2. The cat asks for boots and a bag and promises to help the son.
  3. Puss catches rabbits and other gifts and brings them to the king, saying they are from the "Marquis of Carabas" (the boy).
  4. When the king rides by, Puss tells the boy to bathe. Puss hides the boy's clothes and cries that the Marquis is drowning. The king rescues him and gives him fine clothes.
  5. Puss runs ahead and gets farmers and reapers to say that the land and fields belong to the Marquis whenever the king asks.
  6. Puss tricks the ogre (who can change shapes) into turning into a mouse. Puss catches the mouse and then takes the ogre's castle for his master.
  7. The king believes the boy really owns the land and castle. He asks the boy to marry the princess. The boy and the princess live happily ever after, and Puss becomes a great lord.

Who is who?

  • The miller's son — the kind, poor young man (called the Marquis by Puss).
  • Puss in Boots — the clever cat who wears boots and helps his master.
  • The King and Princess — the ruler and his daughter who like the Marquis.
  • The Ogre — the powerful creature who owns the castle and can change shapes.

Why did Puss help?

Puss loved his master and wanted him to have a better life. The cat used clever plans to make the king think the boy was rich and important.

Things we can learn

  • Be kind and help the people you care about.
  • Using your brain and making plans can solve problems.
  • It is best to be honest and fair. In this story Puss used tricks, but he helped someone good. We should try to help without hurting others.

Questions to think about

  1. What would you do if you had a talking cat?
  2. Which part of the story do you like the most? Why?
  3. Do you think Puss was a good friend? Tell one reason.

Fun activity

Draw a picture of Puss in Boots with his tall boots and bag. Or act out the story with friends: one can be Puss, one the miller's son, one the king, and one the ogre. Have fun pretending!

If you want, I can help make a simple coloring page or a short puppet script for you to act out the story.
