Hi! Let’s learn about butterflies.
Butterflies go through four big steps called the life cycle. Each step is easy to remember. Read the steps and then try the fun ideas to help butterflies in your garden.
1. Egg
A mommy butterfly lays tiny eggs on a leaf. The eggs are very small — sometimes as small as a pin head.
2. Caterpillar (larva)
The egg hatches into a caterpillar. Caterpillars eat leaves a lot so they can grow big and strong. They shed their skin several times as they grow.
3. Chrysalis (pupa)
When the caterpillar is ready, it makes a hard shell called a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis the caterpillar changes into a butterfly. This change is called metamorphosis.
Tip: A chrysalis is not the same as a cocoon. Cocoons are silk sweaters some moths make. Butterflies hide inside a chrysalis without extra silk.
4. Butterfly
The butterfly comes out of the chrysalis. At first its wings are soft and wet. The butterfly pumps blood into its wings until they dry and become strong. Then it flies away to find flowers.
Why butterflies make the garden pretty
- They have bright, colorful wings that look like flying flowers.
- They visit flowers to drink nectar. While they visit, they help flowers make seeds — this is called pollination.
- Their fluttering makes the garden look happy and alive.
How you can help butterflies (ask an adult to help)
- Plant nectar flowers like zinnias, marigolds, lavender, and coneflowers.
- Grow host plants for caterpillars, for example milkweed for monarch caterpillars.
- Leave some flat stones for butterflies to rest on and a shallow dish with wet sand or pebbles for them to drink from.
- Don’t use bug sprays in the garden — they can hurt butterflies and caterpillars.
- Watch chrysalises from a distance. Ask an adult before touching anything.
Easy activities
- Make a small butterfly watching journal. Draw or write what you see each day.
- Plant a pot with a few butterfly flowers and watch who visits.
- If you find a caterpillar, look up what plant it likes so you can leave that plant there.
Fun fact: Butterflies can taste with their feet! That helps them find the best leaves and flowers.
Have fun watching butterflies make your summer garden pretty like flowers. Remember to be gentle and always ask an adult for help.
