Island Atelier Homeschool — Years 9–10

Moreton Bay Island Atelier — Years 9–10 (Ages 14–16)

A couture-classical charter homeschool program: Trivium & Quadrivium elegantly mapped across seasonal terms; a marine-infused arts strand (Cousteau to Dior), speech & mock court (Ally McBeal theatricality meets Elizabethan oratory), and a rigorous AoPS mathematics progression. Presented in a salon-style portfolio for parent & assessor.

Suggested typographic palette: Playfair Display (headings — couture, Dior/Elizabethan), Libre Baskerville (body — classical readability), Montserrat (notes & labels — modern atelier). Use gold accents (#c49a5d) and seafoam backgrounds (#aee3da) for presentation cards; Ladurée-inspired packaging motifs for printed artifacts.

Glowing Exemplary Parent Homeschool Report

To the Charter Review Board,

I am delighted to present this report for my child, enrolled in the Moreton Bay Island Atelier classical program for Years 9–10. Over the past two terms, their scholarly life has unfolded like a curated salon: daily grammar and rhetoric practice; disciplined mathematical progression through the AoPS Prealgebra and Intro geometry/algebra sequences; immersive Francophone study; and a creative life rooted in marine observation — violin, piano, contemporary and classical dance, documentary film-making (marine themes), and staged mock court and theatrical works.

Notable outcomes this year include: a chamber recital integrating sea-inspired program notes, a short documentary screened locally about tidal ecology (edited and narrated by the student), and a mock appellate argument styled as an Elizabethan court performance (full rhetorical brief and oral argument). The student's written work demonstrates a precise control of register and argumentative structure; oral performances are confident and persuasive; and the mathematical record shows mastery of AoPS course objectives with consistent problem-solving logs and graded assessments.

Beyond academics, the program cultivates embodied learning: weekly snorkel surveys aligned with Cousteau-inspired field journals, twice-weekly pilates and yoga for core strength and poise, and atelier workshops in presentation and couture-style packaging of projects — an integration of beauty, rigor, and marine stewardship.

We are proud to recommend continuation in this program and submit the following portfolio of competencies and exemplar artifacts for evaluation.

Sincerely,

Parent & Atelier Patron

Mathematics Sequence — AoPS (Years 9–10)

Recommended progression to ensure depth and AoPS problem-solving skill growth:

  1. Start Year 9, Term 1: AoPS Prealgebra (complete by Term 3)
  2. Begin AoPS Intro to Geometry in Year 9, Term 2 (paired with practice problems from Prealgebra journal)
  3. Complete Intro to Geometry by end of Year 9 (Term 4). Begin AoPS Intro to Algebra in Year 10, Term 1.
  4. Year 10: Continue with AoPS sequence forward (Intermediate Algebra or Algebra II equivalent) across terms, with emphasis on problem sets, proofs, and contest-style reasoning.

Assessment: weekly problem sets, monthly timed reasoning tests, and a termly project applying math to maritime data (tidal charts, navigation bearings, simple harmonic motion in waveforms).

Languages Plan — French-first, Latin as Enrichment

French is the primary modern language for Years 9–10 with structured weekly modules: grammar, conversation, reading (newspapers/literaure), and cultural salon presentations. Latin is introduced as a targeted enrichment (morphology and etymology) to deepen understanding of grammatical constructs and classical texts.

Weekly cadence: 4x French sessions (2 conversational immersion, 1 grammar/translation, 1 literature/recital), 1x Latin primer session (termly intensives). Assessment through oral exams, translation passages, and a final salon in French where the student presents a short persuasive talk or theatrical monologue.

High-End Couture Equipage & Atelier Notes

Filofax Atelier Entries — Example Week (sample brief)

Mon 09:00 — AoPS: Complete Prealgebra Unit 4 problem set; annotate solution strategies in green pen. Priority: polish proof technique.

Tue 14:00 — Violin rehearsal: integrate breathing cues from Pilates; film final 2-minute movement phrase for documentation. Attach: Instamax #7 "Bow & tide"

Wed 16:00 — Draft mock court rebuttal paragraphs; circulate to peer for feed-forward.

Thu 10:00 — Field snorkel (tidal survey #4) — collect 3 annotated photos; log GPS coordinates and water temp. Later: transcribe interview with marine biologist.

Fri 18:00 — Salon rehearsal: program notes and lighting cues; prepare pearl stock program for printing; ribbon selection (seafoam).

Instamax & Photo Notes (Process Captions)

Use Instamax polaroids to document process — do not submit as sole evidence but as evocative process artifacts. Example captions:

  • "Day 2 — tide pool observation: juvenile seahorse found under jetty piling. 08:34am."
  • "Rehearsal excerpt — opening masque gesture, annotated with rhetorical beats."
  • "Editing session: scrubbing sound, overlaying narration — afternoon light on MacBook keyboard."

Presentation: assemble final portfolio in a clothbound folder; each artifact receives a Ladurée-inspired title card (pearl card stock with gold foil type), reflective mapping sheet, rubric, and 1–3 Instamax process snapshots affixed. The Filofax spine should include a printed termly timeline and a personal credo in French.

Mock Court & Theatre Synthesis (Ally McBeal theatrics + Elizabethan gravitas)

Design mock court experiences as theatrical legal salons: students prepare briefs, adopt court costume cues drawn from Elizabethan pageantry, and employ Ally McBeal-style quick-wit rebuttals in rapid-fire rounds. Assess both legal reasoning and performative craft. Invite community adjudicators (local practitioners) for realism; film for portfolio evidence.

Portfolio Submission Checklist

  • Reflective Mapping pages for each artifact (completed)
  • Rubrics & scored assessments (parent, teacher, and community when available)
  • Digital evidence: audio/video files with timestamps and transcripts
  • Mathematics: AoPS workbooks, solved problems, test logs
  • Language: recorded oral exams & translation journal
  • Filofax timeline & Instamax process snapshots (3 per major artifact)
  • Final salon exhibition artifacts (printed program, curated display)

Next steps: assemble physical & digital portfolio; schedule a 30–45 minute portfolio walk-through with the charter assessor; prepare community presentation for end-of-term salon. For further bespoke templates (rubrics, reflective mapping PDFs, Filofax printable inserts), I can prepare downloadable atelier files in the requested aesthetic.

Voice & styling note: this document blends the marine clarity of Cousteau/Thalgo, the luxe sensibility of LaDuree and Dior, the theatrical legal flair of Ally McBeal and Queen Elizabeth I courtly pageantry, with practical classical pedagogy and AoPS rigor. For printed materials use Playfair Display for headings, Garamond/Libre Baskerville for body, and Montserrat for small labels; gold foil, pearl stock, and seafoam ribbons enhance presentation coherence.
