Barrier Reef Atelier: Years 9–10 Homeschool Front Matter

Ages 14–16 • Start: New Moon 20 December • Voice: Beauxbatons Academy (marine‑couture/biodynamic)

Overview & Intent

This two‑year plan synthesises the Trivium (Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric) and the Quadrivium (Arithmetic, Geometry, Music, Astronomy) into an atelier model tuned to lunar rhythms. It is place‑based for the Great Barrier Reef region, emphasises biodynamic coastal design, marine science, and couture/atelier craft, and foregrounds cross‑disciplinary project work with portfolio artifacts. Instructional cycles begin each lunar month; first cycle begins on the New Moon 20 December. The tone is elegant, curious and slightly magical — scholarly yet playful, like Beauxbatons by the sea.

Competency Framework — Synthesised

Core competencies map to Trivium + Quadrivium, with cross‑disciplinary fluencies.

  • Grammar (Knowledge & Craft): Accurate content knowledge, vocabulary, notation (music notation, mathematical symbols, design specifications), craft techniques (sewing/carpentry basics).
  • Logic (Analysis & Method): Reasoning, experimental method, mathematical proof and modelling, systems thinking, cause/effect in ecology and structures.
  • Rhetoric (Communication & Presentation): Argumentation, creative narrative (film/documentary), exhibition curation, public performance.
  • Arithmetic (Numeracy & Number Sense): AOPS sequence: begin AOPS Prealgebra (concurrent AOPS Intro to Geometry), progress through AOPS Intro to Algebra / Intro to Geometry concurrency, then onward through AOPS intermediate courses.
  • Geometry (Space & Design): Spatial reasoning for coastal architecture, ergonomic design, pattern drafting for couture and soft furnishings.
  • Music: Performance skills (violin, guitar, piano), composition, acoustics and mathematical relationships in sound.
  • Astronomy / Calendrics: Lunar cycle literacy, tide prediction basics, marine phenology, biodynamic planting calendars.
  • Transversal Fluencies: Ecological literacy, digital media literacy, atelier entrepreneurship, collaborative project management, safety & building biology.

Lunar‑Aligned Sequencing — Practical Notes

Lunar month ≈29.5 days. Each module = 1 lunar month focus (new moon to new moon); a larger project may span 2–3 lunar months. Starting New Moon: 20 December (Year of commencement). Rhythm supports fieldwork timed to tides, biodynamic planting, and night‑sky observation.

  • Month 1 (New Moon start): Orientation, baseline diagnostics, launch performance/craft sprint.
  • Month 2 (Waxing): Accumulation of skills (AOPS Prealgebra + Intro to Geometry concurrency), technique labs for instrument/atelier.
  • Full Moon Month: Public sharing, performances, documentary screenings, site exhibitions (peak energy).
  • Waning months: Reflection, iteration, deeper theory (Intro to Algebra concurrency), maintenance & restoration activities for biodynamic projects.

Schedule is intentionally cyclical: learning builds across lunar cycles and loops into cumulative capstone projects in Year 10.

Math Pathway (concise)

  • AOPS Prealgebra (begin) concurrently with AOPS Intro to Geometry — emphasis on number sense, proof basics and spatial reasoning.
  • Next cycle: AOPS Intro to Algebra run concurrently with continued Intro to Geometry practice and applied geometric design projects.
  • Then proceed through the AOPS sequence (Intermediate Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus) paced across Years 9–11; assess through problem sets, projects, and oral defense (Rhetoric competency).

Assess via competency rubrics (Grammar/Logic/Rhetoric + Quadrivium outcomes). Each exemplar artifact below lists mapped competencies, assessment criteria, and evidence. Portfolios (digital + tactile) are curated annually and presented at a Full Moon Salon (public/share event).

Implementation Tips (Beauxbatons Atelier Style)

  • Keep ceremonies: open each lunar month with a short New Moon "launch" and close with reflective Full Moon Salon.
  • Balance synchronous skill labs (instrument lessons, math problem sessions) with asynchronous studio time (sewing, CAD, field recording).
  • Use paired assessment: student self‑reflection + external reviewer (mentor/parent/peer) to triangulate grades.
  • Archive everything in a digital portfolio (video, audio, PDFs) and maintain a tactile portfolio chest for crafted objects.
Prepared with Seafoam grace and Emerald curiosity — a curriculum atelier for curious scholars by the reef.
