What makes a rattlesnake shake its tail?
A rattlesnake has a special tail with tiny hard rings at the end. When it feels scared or wants to protect itself, it can quickly move its tail back and forth to make a loud rattle sound.
Why do they do that?
- Warning to stay away: The rattle is like a warning bell. It tells other animals, "I might bite if you come closer."
- Time to back off: The sound helps scary animals or people decide to leave, so the rattlesnake doesn’t have to bite.
What happens when you hear it?
- It’s best to stay calm and slowly move away.
- Do not touch the snake or try to pick it up.
- Give it space so it can feel safe.
Fun fact
Not all snakes rattle. Only some rattlesnakes have this special tail tool to warn others.
