How do we know if water is safe to drink?

Safe drinking water means it won’t make you sick. Here are simple, kid-friendly ideas to help you know if water is likely safe:

  • Tap water from a clean source: If your family uses treated tap water from a public water system, it is tested and cleaned to remove germs and bad stuff.
  • Clear and clean appearance: Water that looks clear and doesn’t have funny colors, bits, or a strong smell is usually safe to drink. If it looks cloudy, murky, or has a bad odor, don’t drink it.
  • Seasonal or after events: After heavy rain, floods, or maintenance, water can pick up germs. If you’re unsure, use bottled water or boiled water and wait to drink it.
  • Boiling as a safe method: If you’re not sure about the safety of water, you can boil it. Let it boil for 1 minute (or 3 minutes at higher elevations), then cool it before drinking.
  • Filter or purification: Some filters and purifiers can make water safer. If you’re using one, follow the instruction manual carefully.
  • Ask an adult: When in doubt, ask a parent, guardian, or teacher. They can help you decide if the water is safe or if you should use bottled water.

What should you do if you’re unsure about water safety?

  1. Don’t drink the water right away.
  2. Tell an adult and describe what the water looks and smells like.
  3. Use bottled water or boiled water if advised by an adult.
  4. Wash your hands after handling water that might be unsafe.

Remember, most clean tap water is safe, but cloudy, smelly, or discolored water should not be drunk until an adult checks it.
