What are the Rule of 3's?

The Rule of 3's is a simple way to remember how long you can stay safe without certain essentials while you’re outdoors. It helps you stay calm and know when to ask for help.

The basic ideas

  • 3 minutes without air (like if you were underwater or had trouble breathing).
  • 3 hours without warmth (staying safe from cold, wind, or rain).
  • 3 days without water (drinking enough water).
  • 3 weeks without food (not eating for a long time).

In bush skills, we usually focus on the first three: air, warmth, and water. Food is important, but the body can use stored energy for a while longer than the other needs.

How to use the Rule of 3's in practice

  1. Air: If you’re having trouble breathing or feel light-headed, stop, sit down, and get help right away.
  2. Warmth: If you’re cold, put on a layer, find shelter, or build a small fire safely with an adult’s help.
  3. Water: If you’re thirsty for a long time, look for a safe water source or carry water with you. Remember to treat water if you know how.

Important safety note: Always hike with an adult, tell someone where you’re going, and bring a small bag with water, a snack, a light, and a whistle. Practice these steps in a supervised setting so you know what to do if you ever feel uncomfortable outdoors.
