How Polar Bears Use Ice Floes Like Rafts
A polar bear lives in the cold Arctic. The ocean there is covered with big chunks of ice called ice floes. These floes float on the water like tiny boats.
When a polar bear wants to go somewhere to find food, it can climb onto a floe. The floe drifts with the currents and wind, so the bear can ride along without swimming all the time. This is similar to using a raft on water.
Why this helps:
- Ice floes move the bear across wide, open water.
- Being on a floe helps the bear stay out of the cold water where it could get too chilly or unsafe.
- From the floe, the bear can look for seals, which are a main food source in the Arctic.
Safety note for kids: In real life, polar bears are wild animals. They should be observed from a safe distance with grown-ups present. Do not touch or approach wild animals.
