Welcome to Year 1 Maths!
Here are easy, fun steps to learn basic maths for a 6-year-old.
- Counting – Count from 1 to 20 aloud. Practice counting objects like blocks or buttons. Count forward and then count back from 20.
- Number Recognition – Look at numbers 1–20 and say their names. Match numbers to groups of objects (e.g., 7 apples for 7).
- Writing Numbers – Trace and write numbers 1–20. Start with big handwriting, then small when ready.
- Addition Basics – Combine two groups of objects to see how many there are in total. Example: 3 apples + 2 apples = 5 apples. Use fingers or objects to help.
- Subtraction Basics – Take away some objects and count what’s left. Example: 5 cookies minus 2 cookies = 3 cookies.
- Shapes – Learn shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle. Point out shapes in the room and in pictures. Practice naming and drawing them.
- Patterns – Create simple patterns (red, blue, red, blue) and predict what comes next. Extend with colors or shapes.
- Place Value (Intro) – Understand “tens” and “ones” at a very basic level by grouping objects into tens and ones (10 blocks = 1 ten).
- Word Problems – Use simple stories: If you have 4 toy cars and you get 1 more, how many cars now? Use drawings to show the solution.
Tips for fun learning:
- Use lots of real objects (blocks, buttons, coins).
- Make learning a game with small rewards.
- Keep sessions short (5–15 minutes) and repeat often.
- Celebrate trying, not just getting the right answer.
