Welcome to Year 2 Maths!
In Year 2, you learn about numbers up to 100 and how to add and subtract more easily. Here are the basics with simple examples.
1) Place Value
Place value tells us what each digit in a number means. In two-digit numbers, there is a tens part and a ones part.
- Tens tells us how many groups of ten are in the number.
- Ones tells us how many single ones are left over.
Example: The number 46 has 4 tens and 6 ones. So, 46 = 40 + 6.
2) Addition (bringing numbers together)
- Use objects or fingers to count up to a total.
- When adding two-digit numbers, you can add tens and ones separately.
Example: 23 + 14 Step 1: Add tens: 20 + 10 = 30 Step 2: Add ones: 3 + 4 = 7 Step 3: Total = 37
You can also use number bonds to 10 to help: 7 + 3 = 10, then add the tens.
3) Subtraction (taking away)
Subtraction is finding how many are left after taking some away. You can count back on a number line or use fingers/objects.
Example: 29 - 12 Step 1: Subtract tens: 20 - 10 = 10 Step 2: Subtract ones: 9 - 2 = 7 Step 3: Total left = 17
4) Number Patterns
Learn the patterns of counting numbers forward and backward, and recognise even and odd numbers.
- Even numbers end with 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.
- Odd numbers end with 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9.
Practice counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s to build fluency.
5) Practical Activities
- Count objects (beans, coins, buttons) to practice tens and ones.
- Write simple addition and subtraction stories about daily life (e.g., sharing sweets).
- Use a number line to hop forwards for addition and backwards for subtraction.
Tips for Successful Learning
- Use lots of concrete objects first, then move to drawings and written numbers.
- Practice a little every day to build speed and confidence.
- Ask questions like, “What pattern do you notice?” or “Can you explain your steps?”
