Welcome to Addition and Subtraction!
Today we’ll learn two big ideas: putting numbers together (adding) and taking numbers away (subtracting).
1) Adding (Putting Numbers Together)
When we add, we combine two groups to make a bigger group.
- Example: 3 apples + 2 apples = 5 apples.
- Count all the objects to find the answer: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
We can write it as 3 + 2 = 5.
2) Subtracting (Taking Away)
When we subtract, we start with a group and take some away to see how many are left.
- Example: 5 candies - 2 candies = 3 candies left.
- Count how many are left: 1, 2, 3.
We can write it as 5 - 2 = 3.
3) Numbers and Counting
Practice counting up to 20 or 30 and back down. Use fingers, beads, or toys to help.
4) Quick Tips
- Use concrete objects (pencils, buttons) to see the math.
- Say the numbers aloud while counting.
- Keep sums small at first, then build up as you get confident.
5) Mini Practice
- 6 + 1 = ?
- 4 + 3 = ?
- 7 - 2 = ?
- 9 - 4 = ?
Answers: 7, 7, 5, 5. You can write them and draw the objects used.
