Welcome to Year 1 Math: Addition and Subtraction
Today we will learn how to add and subtract using things you can count. We’ll use friendly examples with objects like apples or pencils.
1) Counting First
- Count all the objects to see how many there are in total.
- Practice counting 1 to 20 so you recognize numbers quickly.
2) Addition (Putting Together)
- Take 2 apples in one hand and 3 apples in another hand.
- Put them together and count all the apples: 2, 3, 4, 5. So 2 + 3 = 5.
- Use a simple number sentence: 2 + 3 = 5.
Tip: Use objects you can touch. If you don’t have apples, use pencils, coins, or buttons.
3) Subtraction (Taking Away)
- Start with a small group of objects, say 5 blocks.
- Take away 2 blocks and count how many are left: 5 - 2 = 3.
- Write the sentence: 5 - 2 = 3.
Tip: Saying the numbers aloud helps. Example: “Five take away two leaves three.”
4) Word Problems (Stories)
- Sam has 4 toy cars. He gets 1 more car. How many cars now? 4 + 1 = 5.
- There are 6 balloons. 2 balloons fly away. How many are left? 6 - 2 = 4.
5) Quick Practice
- Count out loud from 1 to 20.
- Practice 1-step addition and subtraction with small numbers (0-10).
- Draw a tiny picture to show your sums and differences.
6) When You’re Stuck
Ask for help from a grown-up or count on your fingers. It’s okay to take your time and try again.
Remember: Practice makes this easier. Have fun counting and solving little number problems!
