Welcome to Year 1 Maths

In Year 1, you start building confidence with numbers and simple adding. Here are the core ideas you’ll learn and how to practice them.

1. Counting and Number Sense

  • Counting aloud from 1 up to at least 20 (or higher if ready).
  • One-to-one correspondence: pointing to each item once as you count it.
  • Writing numbers from 0 to 20, and recognizing them by sight.
  • Number order: knowing which numbers come before or after another number.

2. Comparing Quantities

  • Using words like more, fewer, and same to compare two groups.
  • Matching groups of objects to a given number (e.g., 5 apples, 5 stars).

3. Basic Addition

  • Adding with objects: put items together and count how many there are in total.
  • Learn the plus (+) sign and the idea of putting two groups together.
  • Number facts like 1+1, 2+1, 3+0, using familiar objects (buttons, coins, blocks).

4. Subitising and Part-Whole

  • Subitising: recognizing a small group’s quantity without counting (e.g., a 3-dot die).
  • Part-whole: understanding that a total can be split into parts, like 4 = 1 + 3.

5. Time and Money Basics (Intro)

  • Recognising days of the week and basic daily routines.
  • Identifying coins (pennies and 1p, 2p) and understanding their values in simple sums.

Practical Tips for Practice

  • Use lots of concrete objects (buttons, bears, blocks) for counting and adding.
  • Play simple games: roll a dice, count the dots, add the two top faces.
  • Draw pictures to show
  • 5 + 2 as five stars plus two stars, then count the total.
  • Ask open questions: How many do we have now? If I take away one, how many are left?

Mini Checkpoints

  1. Can you count aloud to 20 and write numbers correctly?
  2. Can you compare two groups and say which is more or if they are the same?
  3. Can you use objects to add two numbers and find the total?

Remember, practice with fun, everyday situations helps a lot. Keep exploring numbers in your toys, snacks, and games!
