Welcome to Year 2 Maths

In Year 2, you strengthen your number sense and learn to solve simple problems using just your head, a number line, or quick drawings. Here are the main topics and steps to practice them.

1. Place Value and Counting

  • Counting: Count forwards and backwards from any number up to at least 100.
  • Place Value: Understand tens and ones. For example, in 42, there are 4 tens and 2 ones.
  • Reading and Writing Numbers: 0–999, with correct place value roles.

2. Addition and Subtraction

  • Addition: Add up to 20 (and beyond with mental strategies). Use number bonds and counting on.
  • Subtraction: Subtract up to 20. Use empty number line or counting back.
  • Word Problems: Solve simple story problems using pictures or just using numbers.

3. Multiplication and Division (Intro)

  • Repeated Addition: 3 + 3 + 3 is the same as 3 × 3.
  • Times Tables: Begin with 2s, 5s, and 10s. Use arrays or equal groups to understand the concept.
  • Sharing: Fairly split objects into equal groups to introduce division ideas.

4. Measurement

  • Length and Height: Measure using non-standard units (e.g., paper clips) and then standard units (cm, m).
  • Time: Tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes on analogue and digital clocks.
  • Money: Recognize coins and simple sums with pence and pounds.

5. Shape and Space

  • 2D Shapes: Recognize circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, and know their properties.
  • 3D Shapes: Cubes, cuboids, spheres; identify faces, edges, and vertices.
  • Positional Language: In, on, under, next to, between, above, below.

6. Data Handling

  • Sorting: Group items by attribute (color, size, shape).
  • Pictograms: Draw simple pictures to show data (e.g., favourite fruits).

Tips for Learning at Home

  • Use concrete objects: Counters, blocks, coins to model maths problems.
  • Practice little and often: 10–15 minutes daily helps more than long sessions.
  • Make it fun: Turn problems into games, stories, or shopping scenarios.
  • Ask questions: How many more? How many to make 10? What is the total?
  • Check work: Recount or explain your steps aloud to verify answers.

Example Practice Activities

  1. Add and Subtract: 12 + 7 = ? 20 - 4 = ?
  2. Place Value: Write 43 as 4 tens and 3 ones; what is 10 more? 10 less?
  3. Times Table: Make a small table for 2s (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) and use it to solve 6 + 6 or 8 − 4.
  4. Measurement: Measure a pencil and a book with a ruler; compare lengths.
  5. Shape: Find 2D shapes around the house; describe them by sides and corners.

If you tell me which topic you want to focus on, I can tailor a short practice plan just for you.
