Who Was Socrates?

Socrates was a very famous thinker from ancient Greece. He lived a long time ago, around 2,400 years ago. He liked asking questions more than giving answers.

What Did He Do?

  • Asking questions: He would ask people questions to help them think more clearly.
  • Never claiming to know everything: He believed true wisdom comes from realizing what you don’t know.
  • Helping others think: Through questions, he helped people learn to examine their own beliefs.

Why Is He Important?

His way of asking questions inspired a method of thinking called the Socratic Method. This method methods people to reason, test ideas, and learn by themselves.

What Is the Socratic Method?

  1. Ask a clear question about a topic.
  2. Ask follow-up questions to probe deeper.
  3. Watch for problems or contradictions in the answers.
  4. Change your mind or improve your thinking based on evidence.

Simple Example

Question: What is courage?

Student: Courage is being brave.

Socrates would ask: Is courage always the same, or does it change in different situations? Could someone brave in one situation be unsure in another? By asking questions, we learn what we mean by a big word like courage.
