Welcome! Let’s learn Year 2 English together

Today we’ll practice sounds, blending, and easy sentences. We’ll use friendly steps so it’s fun and easy to remember.

1) Phonics: Sounds and How They Help

  • What is phonics? It’s the sounds that letters make and how we put them together to read words.
  • Consonant sounds (like /c/ as in cat, /m/ as in mum, /t/ as in toy).
  • Vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u). Some vowels are short (cat, bed, sip) and some are long (rain = /ai/, make = /a/).
  • Blending = squish sounds together to say a word. e.g., /c/ /a/ /t/ → cat.

2) Simple Blending Practice

  1. Look at the letters: c-a-t.
  2. Say each sound: /c/ /a/ /t/
  3. Blend them together slowly: /c/ /a/ /t/ → cat.
  4. Try: b-a-t → bat, h-a-t → hat, m-a-p → map.

3) Sight Words to Remember

Sight words are words we learn by sight, not just by sounding out. Here are some common ones for Year 2:

  • the, a, I
  • and, to, you
  • in, is, it
  • not, my, had

Tip: Practice 3 sight words each day and try to spot them in simple sentences.

4) Writing Simple Sentences

  • Start with a capital letter, end with a full stop.
  • Use small, easy words. Example: The cat sat on the mat.
  • Focus on spelling the words you know.

5) Quick Practice Activity

  1. Choose one word from the blending list (cat, bat, hat, map) and write a sentence with it.
  2. Write two sight words you learned today in a row (e.g., the cat).
  3. Read a short sentence aloud and clap the sounds you hear in each word.

6) Quick Feedback Tips for Parents

  • Keep practice short (5–10 minutes) and fun.
  • Use flashcards for blending sounds.
  • Celebrate small successes to build confidence.
