How Do Trees Grow?
Trees start small. They grow from a tiny seed that falls to the ground. With sun, water, and soil, the seed wakes up and sprouts a little shoot and a root.
Here are the main parts and how they grow:
- Roots: they grow down into the soil to drink water and hold the tree steady.
- Trunk: the big, strong stem that grows upward to hold the tree high. The trunk also carries water from the roots to the leaves.
- Branches: grow out from the trunk and spread like arms to hold leaves and sometimes fruit or flowers.
- Leaves: the green pages of the tree. They use sunlight, air, and water to make food for the tree in a process called photosynthesis.
With more sunlight, water, and good soil, trees grow taller and bigger. They also make new seeds so more trees can grow in the future!
Fun fact: Trees grow in stages. First a seedling, then a sapling, and finally a grown-up tree. It takes time, just like you growing from a baby to a kid!
