What is the area of a rectangle?

The area is the space inside the rectangle. We can count how many little squares fit inside it.

Formula

Area = length × width

Steps to find the area

  1. Measure or know the length (the long side) of the rectangle.
  2. Measure or know the width (the shorter side).
  3. Multiply the length by the width.
  4. The result is the area. Include the unit square (for example, cm² or m²).

Example

Suppose a rectangle is 6 cm long and 4 cm wide.

Area = 6 cm × 4 cm = 24 cm².

Practice

Try these:

  • Rectangle: length 5 cm, width 3 cm → Area = ?
  • Rectangle: length 9 cm, width 2 cm → Area = ?

Answers: 5 × 3 = 15 cm²; 9 × 2 = 18 cm².
