What is the area of a rectangle?
The area is the space inside the rectangle. We can count how many little squares fit inside it.
Formula
Area = length × width
Steps to find the area
- Measure or know the length (the long side) of the rectangle.
- Measure or know the width (the shorter side).
- Multiply the length by the width.
- The result is the area. Include the unit square (for example, cm² or m²).
Example
Suppose a rectangle is 6 cm long and 4 cm wide.
Area = 6 cm × 4 cm = 24 cm².
Practice
Try these:
- Rectangle: length 5 cm, width 3 cm → Area = ?
- Rectangle: length 9 cm, width 2 cm → Area = ?
Answers: 5 × 3 = 15 cm²; 9 × 2 = 18 cm².
