Step 1: Identify the main ideas

Look for recognizable words or phrases in the message. Here, some Dutch words appear, like "Adonai" (a religious term), "goed" (good), "macaroni gegeten" (ate macaroni), and "ketchup". The rest is unclear or mixed with English.

Step 2: Clarify what is uncertain

When parts of a message are unclear, ask for clarification. For example: "Could you tell me what you mean by the rest of the words? Are you talking about a video on YouTube or something you ate?"

Step 3: Respond kindly and simply

Offer a friendly reply that acknowledges what you understand and asks for more details. Example response:

  • Nice to hear you enjoyed macaroni!
  • What do you mean by the rest of the words?
  • Are you asking about a YouTube video or something else?

Step 4: Improve the message

If you want to share a message in one language, try to keep it clear and complete. For example:

  • "I recently ate macaroni and ketchup. I also watched a video on YouTube. Do you have any suggestions?"

Tip for young learners

When mixing languages, write down what you want to say in one language first, then translate if needed. This helps others understand you better.
