Why Did Henry VIII Break from the Catholic Church?

Many years ago, in England, there was one main church called the Catholic Church. The king at the time, Henry VIII, wanted to be able to control religious matters in his country. He also wanted a male heir and hoped changing the church would help him remarry if his wife could not give him a son.

Key ideas:

  • Powers and control: Henry wanted the king to be in charge of the church in England, not the pope in Rome.
  • Marriage and heirs: He wanted an annulment (a sort of cancellation) of his marriage to Catherine if it wouldn’t lead to a son who could rule after him.
  • Action taken: He separated from the Catholic Church and started his own church in England, the Church of England (Anglican Church).

What happened next?

  • The new church allowed the king to make important decisions about religion in England.
  • The pope did not approve, and England’s religious practices began to change over time.

Why this matters historically: This change started the English Reformation, which shaped how people worshipped, what churches looked like, and how the country was governed for many years.
