Basic Karate Strikes for a 10-Year-Old
Here are simple, safe karate strikes you can learn. Always warm up, listen to your instructor, and practice with a partner only when allowed.
-
Punch (Choku-zuki)
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, non-dominant hand in front, dominant fist near the chest.
- Keep your wrist straight and fingers closed, thumb outside the fist.
- Rotate hips slightly as you punch straight ahead, finishing with the first two knuckles.
- Return to guard position after each punch.
-
Palm Heel Strike (Shuto Uchi or Teisho Uchi)
- From guard, bend your elbow and strike with the bottom of the heel of your hand (or the edge of the palm) toward the target’s torso.
- Keep fingers relaxed, wrist straight, and snap the strike from the shoulder.
- retract to guard after the strike.
-
Knee Strike (Knee) – practice with a pad or target
- Stand tall, lift the knee toward the target with control, and drive forward with hips and core.
- Keep posture upright and avoid over-raising the knee.
- Bring leg back to home position after the strike.
-
Ax Kick (Mae Geri) – basic example
- Lift knee, point toes, and snap the foot forward toward the target.
- Keep hips square and land with control on the pad or mat.
- Return to starting position smoothly.
Safety and Basics
- Always warm up for 5–10 minutes (jogging, stretches).
- Wear appropriate protective gear if practicing with a partner or pad.
- Focus on technique, not power, at first. Speed comes with control.
- Keep chin down, eyes forward, and maintain a balanced stance.
- Listen to your coach and stop if something hurts.
With regular practice, you’ll build confidence, coordination, and safe striking skills.
