Introduction

At 2 years old, we don’t do formal multiplication. We learn by counting, grouping, and sharing. Here’s a gentle way to start.

What is 2x3 like?

We can think of 2 groups with 3 things in each group. We aren’t using numbers yet; we’re using ideas you can touch.

Hands-on activity

  1. Take 2 small bowls.
  2. Put 3 blocks in each bowl (or 3 pieces of fruit, or 3 stuffed animals).
  3. Point to both bowls and say, two groups of three or two groups, three in each.

Simple language you can use

  • Counting: one, two, three...
  • Grouping: two groups, three in each
  • Sharing: We share things into equal groups

Why this helps

This builds the idea of multiplication as 'groups of objects' without numbers, which is a good foundation for later counting and math skills.

Tips for caregivers

  • Keep sessions short and fun (2–5 minutes).
  • Use real items the child loves.
  • Repeat with different items and numbers of groups as the child enjoys it.
