Introduction
At 2 years old, we don’t do formal multiplication. We learn by counting, grouping, and sharing. Here’s a gentle way to start.
What is 2x3 like?
We can think of 2 groups with 3 things in each group. We aren’t using numbers yet; we’re using ideas you can touch.
Hands-on activity
- Take 2 small bowls.
- Put 3 blocks in each bowl (or 3 pieces of fruit, or 3 stuffed animals).
- Point to both bowls and say, two groups of three or two groups, three in each.
Simple language you can use
- Counting: one, two, three...
- Grouping: two groups, three in each
- Sharing: We share things into equal groups
Why this helps
This builds the idea of multiplication as 'groups of objects' without numbers, which is a good foundation for later counting and math skills.
Tips for caregivers
- Keep sessions short and fun (2–5 minutes).
- Use real items the child loves.
- Repeat with different items and numbers of groups as the child enjoys it.
