Is the Earth round?
Yes! The Earth is round, like a ball, but a bit squished at the sides. This shape is called a slightly flattened sphere or an eraoid.
Here are some kid-friendly ideas to understand why:
- Ships disappear hull-first: When a ship sails away, you see the hull disappear before the mast, which happens on a round surface.
- Around the world: If you travel in one direction (east or west) long enough, you come back to where you started. That works on a round surface.
- Different skies: In different places, people see different stars and constellations, which makes sense on a round Earth that is spinning and turning toward the Sun.
- Shadow test: When the Sun shines on people in different places at the same time, the shadows are different lengths. This happens because the Earth is round and tilted a bit.
- Pictures from space: We have photos taken from space that clearly show Earth as a round globe.
Important note for an 8-year-old: eroids are very large and look flat from our everyday view, just like how a basketball looks flat from far away but is actually round up close.
