Welcome, Stephanie! Let's learn how to read a clock step by step.

There are two kinds of clocks we’ll look at: the analog clock (with hands) and the digital clock (numbers). Today we’ll focus on the analog clock and how to read it.

Two hands on the clock:

  • Hour hand — the shorter hand. It shows which hour it is.
  • Minute hand — the longer hand. It shows how many minutes past the hour.

How to read the time:

  1. Look at where the hour hand is pointing. It tells you the current hour or the hour you are in.
  2. Look at where the minute hand is pointing. The clock face is divided into 60 minutes. Each number on the clock (1 through 12) represents 5-minute steps. So:
    • 12 = 0 minutes
    • 1 = 5 minutes
    • 2 = 10 minutes
    • 3 = 15 minutes
    • 4 = 20 minutes
    • 5 = 25 minutes
    • 6 = 30 minutes
    • 7 = 35 minutes
    • 8 = 40 minutes
    • 9 = 45 minutes
    • 10 = 50 minutes
    • 11 = 55 minutes

Example 1: If the hour hand is between 3 and 4, and the minute hand is on 12, it is 3:00.

Example 2: If the hour hand is between 3 and 4, and the minute hand is on 6, it is 3:30.

Tip: For times like 3:01 or 3:02, the minute hand points near 12 but a little past it. The exact minute is counted from 1 to 59.

Quick practice:

  • Clock shows hour hand on 5 and minute hand on 12 → 5:00
  • Hour hand on 7 and minute hand on 3 → 7:15
  • Hour hand between 9 and 10, minute hand on 6 → about 9:30

With practice, you'll read times faster. If you want, I can give you more practice clocks to read!
