Plastic Pollution: How does it get there?

  1. Everyday plastic products like bags, bottles, wrappers, and fishing gear are used and often thrown away.
  2. If we throw plastic on the ground, it can blow away with the wind or get washed into drains and sewers.
  3. Rain and rivers carry litter from streets and towns into lakes, rivers, and eventually the ocean.
  4. In the water, wind and waves break some plastics into tiny pieces called microplastics.
  5. Animals may mistake pieces of plastic for food or become tangled in it, which can hurt or kill them.
  6. People can help by recycling, reusing, picking up litter, and using fewer single-use plastics.

Overfishing: What happens if one fish disappears from the food chain?

The food chain is like a roundabout with plants at the bottom, small animals in the middle, and bigger animals that eat them on top. If a fish species disappears, the balance can wobble:

  • The predators that rely on that fish may have less food and their numbers drop.
  • The fish's prey can grow bigger because there’s less competition from that predator, changing who else eats them.
  • Other animals may move in to fill the gap, or the whole ecosystem can shift to a new balance (sometimes not as healthy).
  • People who fish for that species may lose jobs or food sources, so ecosystems and communities are affected.

Climate Change: How does heat change the water?

  • Heat makes water molecules move faster and causes water to expand. This is called thermal expansion, and it can raise sea levels.
  • Warm water holds less oxygen. Fish and other creatures may struggle to breathe, especially in warm, crowded waters.
  • Hot water can stress corals and other animals, sometimes causing coral bleaching (they lose color and may die).
  • Warmer surface waters can create stronger storms and change where nutrients mix with the deep ocean, which can affect food for tiny plants and animals.
  • Water heats up unevenly: the surface warms first, while deep water stays cooler, creating layers that don’t mix as much as they used to.
