What is Cades Cove?
Cades Cove is a large, grassy valley in the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. It has a long history of people living there, farming, and building communities.
Step 1: Native peoples
Long ago, Native Americans used the valley for hunting and gathering. They left trails and helped shape how the land was used long before settlers arrived.
Step 2: European settlers and pioneer life
In the 1800s, families moved into Cades Cove and built log cabins, farms, mills, and small schools. They formed a tight-knit community with churches and cemeteries that tell part of their story today.
Step 3: Daily life in the cove
People farmed crops and kept animals, ran small mills, and used the streams for water. The valley grew with more homes and buildings, many now preserved as historical sites.
Step 4: The park era and changes
In the 1930s, the land became part of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Some families were moved to make space for the park, but many historic buildings were saved and are kept for visitors to learn from. A loop road and other facilities were built to help people explore the area.
Step 5: Today
Today, Cades Cove is a popular place to hike, see wildlife, and learn about history. Visitors can walk to old cabins, churches, and cemeteries and imagine what life was like for the people who lived there long ago.
