Welcome, aspiring bear biologist!
In Cades Cove you’ll meet the North American black bear. This guide helps you understand their world in simple steps.
- Step 1 — What is a black bear?
A black bear is a large mammal with sharp claws, strong sense of smell, and a curious mind. They come in different colors—from black to brown—and are excellent at climbing trees. - Step 2 — Where do they live in Cades Cove?
They live in the woods, meadows, and along streams. They need dense cover to rest and berries or insects to eat. - Step 3 — What do they eat?
Diet changes with the seasons:- Spring: plants, insects, and opportunistic foods
- Summer: berries, grasses, nuts, and insects
- Fall: acorns and more berries to fatten up for winter
- Step 4 — How do they grow and live?
Mothers have cubs in dens during winter. Cubs ride with their mother for about 1.5–2 years, learning to find food and stay safe. - Step 5 — Safety tips for observing bears
Keep your distance, never feed bears, store food properly, and stay on designated trails. If a bear notices you, back away slowly and speak calmly.
Mini activity: Start a field journal. Draw a bear sign, note the season, what the bear might be eating, and how far away you think you are from safety.
