What is puberty?
Puberty is a natural process where a child’s body starts changing into an adult body. Hormones drive these changes, and everyone goes through them at their own pace.
Common changes you might notice
- Growth spurts: getting taller quickly.
- Body hair: underarms, pubic area, and sometimes the face.
- Skin and hair changes: more oil on the skin, which can cause acne.
- Body shape changes: breasts or hips may develop, shoulders may broaden, and muscle tone can change.
- Boys may notice erections and a deeper voice; girls may start having periods.
- Feelings can change quickly—mood swings and new interests are common.
Basic anatomy you should know
Understanding the basics helps you take care of your body and know what’s happening when changes occur.
- Male-related anatomy: penis, testicles (in a scrotum).
- Female-related anatomy: vulva, vagina, uterus, ovaries.
- All bodies have reproductive and urinary organs, and you may notice differences between bodies.
Consent and healthy relationships
Consent means getting a clear, enthusiastic agreement before any touch or intimate activity. It’s about respecting others’ boundaries and communicating openly. If someone says no or doesn’t answer clearly, you should stop immediately.
Safety and asking questions
It’s okay to have questions. Talk to a trusted adult (parent, guardian, school nurse, or doctor) who can give accurate information. You can also use reliable health resources and ask your school about sex-education programs.
