What is Marche?

Marche is one of Italy's 20 regions, located in central Italy along the Adriatic coast.

How is its government structured?

Like other Italian regions, Marche has a regional government composed of three main parts.

  • Presidente della Regione (President of the Region) who acts as the head of the regional government.
  • Giunta Regionale (Regional Cabinet) made up of assessors appointed by the President to run different policy areas (for example health, transport, economy, education).
  • Consiglio Regionale (Regional Council) which is the legislative body elected by residents to pass regional laws and approve the regional budget.

The region operates under a Statuto (regional statute) that defines its powers. The capital and seat of government for Marche is Ancona.

What does Marche's government do?

It handles regional matters such as health services, transportation and roads, education at the regional level, environmental protection, planning, culture and tourism, and support for local economies and municipalities.

Where is Marche located?

Marche is in central Italy, along the Adriatic Sea. It borders Emilia-Romagna to the north, Umbria to the west, Lazio and Abruzzo to the south/east, and its eastern edge faces the sea. Its capital city is Ancona.
