What is the United Kingdom?

The United Kingdom (UK) is a sovereign country in Europe. Its full official name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

How is it organized?

The UK is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. This means there is a monarch (as of 2024, King Charles III) who is the head of state in a largely ceremonial role, and a Prime Minister who is the head of government. The UK Parliament in Westminster has two houses: the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Members of the House of Commons (MPs) are elected; members of the Lords are appointed and can be experts or former politicians.

Devolution

Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have their own devolved administrations that handle many local matters, such as education and health. They have their own legislatures/assemblies (Scottish Parliament, Senedd in Wales, Northern Ireland Assembly). England does not have a separate legislature, so many laws apply to the whole UK but many powers are devolved to the other nations.
