Thunder is a loud sound that happens when there is a storm. It sounds like a big, deep rumble or a loud bang. It happens because of lightning, which is a bright flash in the sky. When lightning strikes, it heats up the air really quickly. This makes the air expand fast and creates the sound we hear as thunder.

You know how when you pop a balloon, it makes a loud noise? Thunder is kind of like that! But instead of a balloon, it's the air reacting to the heat from lightning. Sometimes thunder can sound very close, like it is right above us, and other times it can be far away, sounding softer. You might also hear it crackle or roar, just like a lion!

So, the next time you hear thunder, remember it’s just the sound of the air getting a little too excited because of the lightning!
