Welcome to a friendly, step-by-step planting activity designed for a 9-year-old. You will learn how to grow tiny seeds into sprouts.

  1. Choose seeds: Pick easy options like beans, sunflowers, radishes, or herbs. Check the packet for how long it takes to germinate.
  2. Gather supplies: pots or seed trays with drainage, potting soil, seeds, a small watering can or spray bottle, a label, and a spoon or scoop.
  3. Fill containers: Fill with potting soil, leaving about 1 cm of space at the top for watering.
  4. Plant seeds: Make tiny holes (about as deep as the seed is wide). Put 1–2 seeds in each hole and cover lightly with soil.
  5. Water: Gently moisten the soil with a light spray or small watering can. Do not overwater.
  6. Sunlight: Put the pots in a sunny spot (at least 6 hours of light each day) or use a grow light.
  7. Label: Put a label on each pot with the seed name and the date you planted.
  8. Caring: Check daily. Keep the soil damp (not soggy) and watch for the first signs of sprouts in a few days to a couple of weeks.
  9. Transplanting (optional): When seedlings have a few true leaves, you can transplant them gently into a bigger pot or into a garden bed with an adult’s help.
  10. Safety: Wash hands after handling soil, use child-safe tools, and clean up spills to prevent slipping.
