What are single-digit numbers?
Single-digit numbers are the numbers from 0 to 9. They are the building blocks for all the other numbers.
Step 1: Count forward from 0 to 9
- Start at 0, then say 1, 2, 3, up to 9.
- Use a number line or your fingers to help you.
- Tip: Point to each number as you say it.
Step 2: Count backward from 9 to 0
- Start at 9, go 8, 7, down to 0.
- Practice until it feels easy.
Step 3: Ordering and comparing
- Put the numbers 0–9 in order from smallest to largest.
- Ask questions: Which is earlier, 2 or 7? Which is bigger, 4 or 6?
Step 4: Count with objects
- Count real things: buttons, coins, blocks, or stickers.
- Practice counting in small groups: 2, 2, 2, 3 (total 9).
Step 5: Patterns and adding 1
- Adding 1 means moving to the next number (0→1, 5→6, 9→10).
- Try: 0+1=1, 1+1=2, 2+1=3, ..., 9+1=10.
Fun practice activities
- Number line hop: jump to the next number on a floor tape.
- Card order game: mix cards 0–9 and arrange them in order.
- Skip-counting basics: count by 2s (2,4,6,8) and by 5s (5,10) with small objects.
