- Line up the numbers by place value, with ones under ones and tens under tens.
- Add the ones digits. If the sum is 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry 1 to the tens.
- Add the tens digits plus any carried 1.
- Write the total as the answer.

- 23 + 19
- Ones: 3 + 9 = 12, write 2 and carry 1
- Tens: 2 + 1 + 1 carried = 4
- Answer: 42
- 57 + 36
- Ones: 7 + 6 = 13, write 3 and carry 1
- Tens: 5 + 3 + 1 carried = 9
- Answer: 93
- 46 + 29
- Ones: 6 + 9 = 15, write 5 and carry 1
