What is the Trivium?
The Trivium is an ancient approach to learning that splits study into three parts: Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. It mirrors how children grow and learn to handle ideas.
Three stages
- Grammar stage — collect facts, names, and rules. For a 10-year-old this means building a strong base of vocabulary and basic facts.
- Logic stage — learn to think clearly, ask questions, and see how ideas fit together. Practice with simple puzzles and cause and effect.
- Rhetoric stage — learn to explain ideas clearly and convince others with good writing and short talks.
How to use it
- Grammar activities: flashcards, memorization games, timelines.
- Logic activities: flowcharts, simple debates, reasoning games.
- Rhetoric activities: short writings, explain to a friend, mini presentations.
Why it helps
By collecting facts, thinking carefully, and then explaining your ideas, you learn more efficiently and remember information longer.
Simple example
Topic: why do plants need sunlight?
- Grammar: learn terms like sun, light, energy and basic facts about plants.
- Logic: connect ideas about how sunlight helps plants make food.
- Rhetoric: write a short paragraph or give a tiny talk explaining the reason.
