Puberty is when your body starts to change to become more like an adult. Hormones, especially androgens (like testosterone), trigger hair growth in new places.

  1. Hair around the pubic area can extend toward the buttocks and the skin around the anus. It's normal for hair to appear there during puberty, and every person’s pattern is a little different. Some people get hair there earlier or more densely than others.
  2. Grooming/hygiene tips: You can leave it alone, or trim, shave, or wax if you prefer, but be careful to avoid irritation or injury. Use clean tools, gentle shaving cream, and moisturize after shaving. If you shave, use a fresh blade and go slow. If you experience itching, redness, bumps, or pain, stop and seek advice.
  3. When to talk to a parent or healthcare provider: if you’re unsure whether what you’re seeing is normal, if you notice other unusual symptoms (pain, sores, redness, swelling, or a rapid change in hair growth elsewhere), or if puberty-related changes feel overwhelming.

Bottom line

Hair growth in this area is a normal part of puberty for many teens, and patterns vary. It’s nothing to worry about unless you have other symptoms or concerns.
