Welcome to chemistry

Chemistry is the science of matter and how it changes. It helps us understand what things are made of and how they behave when we mix them, heat them, or cool them.

1. The building blocks of everything

Everything around us is made of tiny pieces called atoms. Atoms join together to form elements, like hydrogen or oxygen, and compounds, like water. A molecule is a group of atoms stuck together.

  • Atoms are the smallest parts of an element that can exist by themselves.
  • Elements are kinds of atoms. The periodic table is a map of all elements.
  • Compounds are made when different kinds of atoms join in specific amounts, like two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom in water.

2. States of matter

Matter can be a solid, a liquid, or a gas. Substances can change from one state to another by heating or cooling.

3. Physical vs chemical changes

Physical changes change how something looks or feels without making a new substance. Chemical changes make new substances and are often not easily reversed.

  • Ice melting is a physical change.
  • Bread baking is a chemical change because the ingredients react and form new flavors and textures.

4. Quick intro to the periodic table

The periodic table is a map of elements. Each box tells you the element name, and its number shows how many protons it has. Columns group elements with similar properties.

5. A tiny lab at home and safety

You can explore safely with supervision. Always wear safety goggles if you have them, wash hands after experiments, and never taste or sniff unknown chemicals.

  • Always work with an adult supervising you.
  • Keep substances away from eyes and mouth.
  • Label containers clearly and store them safely.

6. A simple experiment you can try

Try dissolving sugar in water. Stir until no more sugar dissolves, observe how it disappears. This is a physical change because the sugar is still sugar, just spread out in the water.

Another safe demo with adult help: mix baking soda and vinegar to see bubbles. This shows a chemical reaction producing a gas.

7. The scientific method in chemistry

Scientists ask questions, form a hypothesis, test with experiments, observe and record what happens, and then explain and share results.

Have fun exploring, asking questions, and thinking like a junior chemist.
