The Fourth Amendment is a rule from the U.S. Constitution. It protects people’s privacy by saying the police usually can’t search your things or take your belongings without a good reason.

Think of it as a privacy shield. It helps make sure that private spaces like your home and your belongings aren’t opened by strangers without permission or a good reason.

Two big ideas

  1. Privacy comes first: People deserve to feel that their things are private unless there is a good reason to check them.
  2. A good reason is needed for most searches: If the police want to search a home or car, they usually need a warrant from a judge. A warrant is a paper that says, “You may search these places for these things.”

When can searches happen without a warrant?

  • If you say yes to a search (consent).
  • In emergencies (exigent circumstances) where someone might be in danger or something important could be lost.

Why it matters

It protects people from unfair searches and helps families feel safe and respected in their homes and belongings.
