Why you may not have pubic hair yet at age 13
Puberty is when your body starts changing into an adult. It depends on hormones and can happen at different times for different people.
- Timing varies: Most people start puberty between ages 8–14 (girls) or 9–15 (boys). It is common to have no pubic hair at 13 if puberty has not fully started yet.
- Order of changes: Pubic hair usually appears after other puberty changes, such as breast development in girls or growth spurts and voice changes in boys. Hair growth is one of the later signs.
- What you might notice: When it begins, hair may start as very fine, light hair and gradually become thicker and darker over time.
- Things that can affect timing: Genetics, nutrition, health, and medications can influence when puberty starts and how quickly signs appear.
- When to seek help: If you are worried or if you are not showing any signs of puberty by about age 14–15, talk with a parent or guardian and your pediatrician. They can check growth and hormone development and answer questions.
Remember, everyone grows at their own pace. Not having pubic hair at 13 does not mean there is something wrong.
