How to answer questions across subjects

  1. Read the question carefully and determine the type of answer required: fact, detail, inference, or opinion.
  2. Locate evidence in the text that supports your answer. Mark page numbers or lines if needed.
  3. Plan a short answer or outline before you write. State your main idea first, then add 2 or 3 supporting points.
  4. Keep your writing clear and precise. Use your own words; quotes only if required.
  5. Check your work: make sure your answer addresses the question and that your evidence actually supports it.
