Earth: a simple guide for an 8-year-old
Earth is our home planet. It goes around the Sun and spins like a top. It is the third planet from the Sun.
Where Earth sits in the solar system
There are many planets. Earth is special because it has water, air, and life. The Sun's gravity keeps Earth in orbit.
Inside Earth
Earth has three main layers:
- Crust — the thin outside shell where we live
- Mantle — hot, soft rock beneath the crust
- Core — a solid inner part with a liquid outer part that helps make the magnetic field
What Earth looks like on the outside
From space you can see blue oceans, green and brown land, and white clouds. Earth's air is called the atmosphere, and it helps us breathe and protects us from sun rays.
Day and night
Earth spins. When your side faces the Sun, it is day. When it faces away, it is night.
Seasons and tilt
The axis (the line through Earth from end to end) is tilted. That tilt causes seasons—spring, summer, autumn, and winter—as Earth goes around the Sun.
Water, life, and weather
Most of Earth is covered by water. Water moves in a cycle with rain, rivers, and oceans. Life grows because of water, air, and sunlight.
How we study Earth
Scientists use tools like satellites, maps, and rocks to learn about Earth and how it changes.
