Introduction
Here is a clear, kid friendly look at three topics from early modern England: King James, the King James Bible and the Gunpowder Plot.
Who was King James
King James I of England and James VI of Scotland ruled from 1603 to 1625. He was the king when the Gunpowder Plot happened and he supported a new English Bible translation that would be read in churches.
What is the King James Bible
In 1611 a team of scholars finished translating the Bible into English. This version is called the King James Version. It became very influential in churches and in the way English people write and speak.
What was Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot
In 1605 a group of Catholics, led by Guy Fawkes, planned to blow up Parliament while the king and lawmakers were there. They hoped to restore Catholic rule in England. They hid barrels of gunpowder under the House of Lords. The plot was discovered before they could light the powder. Guy Fawkes and the others were arrested and punished under the law. The event is remembered in Britain on November 5 as Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night, with bonfires and fireworks. Remember to be safe with fireworks.
