Who were the Wright brothers?
Orville and Wilbur Wright were two brothers who loved building things. They ran a bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio, and became curious about flying.
What problem did they solve?
People had dreamed of flying for a long time, but no one had built a plane that could stay in the air with a person inside.
How did they test their ideas?
They tested many ideas by building gliders, studying how wings lift, and even using a wind tunnel to try out different shapes.
What did they invent?
They created a way to control a plane in the air using three axes: up and down (pitch), turning left and right (yaw), and tilting side to side (roll). This three-axis control helped planes fly steadily and turn.
How did they make the first powered flight?
- They built a small, lightweight engine with a craftsman named Charles Taylor to power the plane.
- On December 17, 1903, Orville piloted the first powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, lasting about 12 seconds and 120 feet.
- They kept flying and improving after that, proving powered flight was possible.
Why is this important?
The Wright brothers showed that heavier-than-air machines could be steered and controlled, paving the way for all airplanes we fly today.
