What is gravity?
Gravity is a pull from the Earth that makes everything fall toward the ground. It isn’t a rope; it’s a force that tugs on every object because Earth is big and heavy.
Why do things fall toward the ground?
When you drop a ball, gravity pulls it down toward the floor. Everything with mass has gravity, and on Earth gravity keeps us from floating away.
Why don't things fall from the ceiling?
Gravity pulls toward the ground, so things go down, not up toward the ceiling. If something is resting on the ceiling, it would fall to the floor unless it is held up by something like a nail, glue, or a string.
Fun quick activity
- Drop a ball and watch it fall down.
- Hold a book above a pillow and let it go—see it fall to the pillow?
- Try placing a toy on a table and one on the ceiling (safe only) to see what happens when gravity pulls down.
